The teachers on my team have started cracking down on them for not being prepared. Today Mr. Dorray started giving 7am detention (that's when he gets there) for those students who forgot to bring their books. Mrs. Harris had given 23(!) students silent lunch for coming to class unprepared. She ended up taking them back to her classroom for silent lunch since there were so many.
They also want to be able to make up everything. Deadlines do not mean anything to them. I think the teachers could so more about this as well. Mr. Dorray never has work due at the end of the class. I was grading their responses to an article we read and the students hadn't done well, so I wrote comments and we let them redo them. That's not so bad, since they apparently hadn't understood what we wanted them to do. But, all of their grades are like this.
They also think they should be able to make up any bad grades - including tests! What is the point of testing them if they get to make it up? Yes, they should master the information, but the test is to see how much they have learned at that point. I think that rather than give a retest, there should just be a second test. I do not like the idea of getting rid of their first grade. When I have my own classroom I want to try this out.
Hopefully, they will improve through this school year. I think the teachers cracking down on being prepared will help them be more prepared and independent.
